‘It is with great sadness that I notify you that, following a valiant struggle with cancer, the lovely and amazing woman that is Helen McCrory has died away quietly at home, surrounded by affection from her friends and family,’ Lewis wrote in the letter.

In addition to Lucky Jim (2003), she has appeared in Charles II: The Power and the Passion (2003) as Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland; and the ITV miniseries Anna Karenina (2000) and Carla (2001), in which she played the primary character of Carla (2003).

She has also appeared in films such as Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994), Dad Savage (1998), Charlotte Gray (2001), Count of Monte Cristo (2002), and Casanova (2002), in which she has had minor roles (2005).

She starred as Cherie Blair in the film The Queen (2006), a role she reprised in the sequel, The Special Relationship, written by Peter Morgan.
